What is Open Source Software
Open Source software is built by developers who believe the source code of the program should be open to inspection, and modification to improve it and freely able to distribute it yourself with a GPL that covers the rules on how you can distribute and change it.
Unlike companies like Microsoft who tell you how to use the software and under what conditions you use it, Open source software allows you freedom. Freedom to choose, modify and distribute.
